Kumar Sangakkara and Shaun Marsh yet again built a solid foundation as Kings XI Punjab reached 174 for 6, the highest total at Eden Gardens in the tournament. It was the final game for the Kolkata Knight Riders - already out of the reckoning for the semi-finals - in front of their home fans but a shoddy display in the field wouldn't have impressed the few that turned up.

There was no slip-up, though, from Punjab, sitting pretty in second position and through to the semi-finals, as their top order once again fired. Marsh has been prolific at the top, and Sangakkara's return after a rib injury has made the job difficult for the opposition bowlers. The Sri Lankan, who made a quickfire fifty in the last game against Deccan Chargers, came up with yet another masterful innings.

After James Hopes was trapped in front by Umar Gul, Sangakkara showed off his silken touch and found the boundaries effortlessly. Ishant Sharma was erratic in the Powerplay overs, his first cost 16, and in his second he was struck for two fours by Sangakkara, one a wristy flick that went racing to the boundary.

With Ishant leaking runs, Sourav Ganguly brought on Sri Lankan sensation Ajantha Mendis in the third over. He conceded just three in his first, but Marsh managed to clear mid-off twice in the next. Another Sangakkara flick through midwicket followed, and he improvised against Laxmi Ratan Shukla, moving across and swatting the ball over short third man with ease. Marsh wasn't to be outscored, and he smashed two sixes, premeditating a slog-sweep over midwicket off Shukla, before depositing David Hussey over the straight boundary. But another charge against Mendis landed straight into the hands of Aakash Chopra at long-on.

Sangakkara's fifty didn't come as quickly it had done against Deccan, but he looked on course for a big one. Unfortunate, a dodgy leg-before decision went against him just after he had walked across his stumps and pulled Umar Gul on the front foot for six.

Yuvraj Singh has been struggling for form in the tournament, but he started with a six off Hussey. Kolkata's fielding was sloppy, with several mis-fields and spilled chances. Ishant should have had a wicket in his first over - Gul dropped a tough diving catch - and a top-edge from Yuvraj was shelled. Ganguly ran back from midwicket to get under the skier, but Chopra, coming in from deep was better placed to take it; the two collided, and the ball popped out of Ganguly's hands.

Yuvraj added insult to injury by smashing three fours in Ishant's final over, and the IPL's most expensive bowler, who has had a disappointing tournament, ended with 49 runs from four overs. Ashok Dinda and Gul, though, gave away just 11 off the final two. Gul came up with the yorkers to strike twice in the 20th, and finished with splendid figures of 4 for 23, but 174 will take some overhauling.
