A typically aggressive 57 by Yuvraj Singh helped Kings XI Punjab to a par score of 165 for 8 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium's opening IPL encounter. Punjab looked set for more but faltered once Yuvraj was dismissed. Shane Warne bowled economically and picked up three wickets to keep Punjab in check and the target of 166 leaves the game wide open.

The flat deck left very little margin for error as the Rajasthan top order picked up boundaries aplenty by merely driving through the line, adjusting easily to the length of the ball. Munaf Patel, after a quiet first over in which he conceded just one run, was clattered for ten in his next over off opener Karan Goel's blade. Goel showed scant respect by stepping down the track and scooping him just in front of the long-off rope before executing a thunderous pull over deep midwicket when Munaf dropped it short.

The punishment continued in his next over as Goel slammed him over midwicket and dispatched a low full toss over long-off. Munaf however had the last laugh as the following ball and sent Goel's offstump out of the ground with a yorker. Kumar Sangakkara started in the same vein, staying rooted to the crease and pounding Siddharth Trivedi for a six over long-off and two fours, all off successive deliveries.

Warne brought himself on and found immediate success, hanging onto a sharp return catch to end Sangakkara's eight-ball cameo. Rajasthan's legspinners pulled things back quickly as Dinesh Salunkhe foxed Mahela Jayawardene in flight, before Warne trapped James Hopes on the sweep.

Yuvraj, the Punjab captain, signaled his arrival with a blazing straight drive off his first ball. Rajasthan however had only themselves to blame for not halting his charge. Darren Lehmann made a meal of a skier at mid-off when Yuvraj was on 15 and there was further shock when Mohammad Kaif, one of the safest catchers, made a complete mess of a straightforward chance at point with Yuvraj at 29.

Yuvraj greeted Trivedi's return with a merciless biff past extra cover before taking on the spinners. Salunkhe and Yusuf Pathan were clattered on the roof over deep midwicket, his third six bringing up his half-century. However, it was 'that' man Warne again who stemmed the rot, cleverly cutting back on the pace and deceiving Yuvraj on the sweep. Punjab had lost three wickets for no run and it took a 11-ball 24 by Piyush Chawla to push them to a competitive score.
