How they were out

In a match dominated by South African stars, the batting efforts of Mark Boucher and Jacques Kallis edged the all-round contribution of Shaun Pollock, as the Bangalore Royal Challengers recovered from Friday's mauling to register their first win of the tournament. Set a challenging 166 by the Mumbai Indians, Bangalore rode on an unbeaten 39 from Boucher, and his 55-run stand with Kallis sealed a five-wicket win with two balls to spare.

Full report to follow.

20 overs Mumbai Indians 165 for 6 v Bangalore Royal Challengers

A couple of handy contributions from Robin Uthappa and Sanath Jayasuriya, and a typically whirlwind 12-ball 28 from Shaun Pollock lifted Mumbai Indians to a challenging 165 for 6 in their opening fixture of the IPL. Bangalore Royal Challengers did an excellent job in the field through most of the session, before falling away at the end as Pollock inspired 36 from the last three overs.

Mumbai's chances suffered a huge blow even before a ball was bowled, when Sachin Tendulkar was ruled out, and while Jayasuriya and Uthappa did their best to make up for the deficit, Tendulkar's absence at the top of the order helped Bangalore immensely.

Luke Ronchi, the wicketkeeper from Western Australia who opened with Jayasuriya, showed why he has a strike rate of 177 in Twenty20 cricket, crunching Praveen Kumar for two handsome boundaries through the off side in the first over, before falling to an outstanding catch by Virat Kohli, who dived to his left and plucked the ball inches off the ground. Inspired by that wicket, and by a pitch which offered plenty of bounce, Zaheer bowled a fiery second over, forcing Dominic Thornely to retire after copping a blow on the grill of his helmet.

The home crowd was silent and the innings was wobbling, but Jayasuriya swung the momentum around in a trice. The move to replace the reasonably tidy Praveen with Kallis backfired badly for Rahul Dravid as Jayasuriya waded into him, blasting two fours down the ground, a flick past short fine leg and a huge blow over long-on for the first six of the match. Nineteen came off the over, and Kallis' miseries continued right through the innings, as his figures of none for 43 off three stood out in what was, for the most part, a tidy bowling performance.

Jayasuriya's threatening knock was abruptly ended by a smart piece of fielding by Zaheer, who gathered the ball of his own bowling and knocked off the stumps at the non-striker's end, but Uthappa continued the good work. He started off by mixing pulls and drives with clever dabs into the gaps for singles, ensuring Mumbai didn't lose their way in the middle of the innings. Vinay Kumar, his state-mate from Karnataka and the highest wicket-taker in the 2007-08 first-class season, bowled a superb over to him, before Uthappa struck back with a delightful late-cut and a hook for six.

As the innings progressed, he became more innovative, moving across his stumps and flicking Kallis over short fine leg. Just two away from a well-deserved 50, he was smartly stumped by Boucher, giving the impressive B Akhil his second wicket of the day.

After 17 overs, Mumbai only had 129, but Pollock boosted them with some outstanding clean hitting. Vinay Kumar was carved for a six and a four over extra cover, while Praveen suffered as well, as Pollock drilled a six over long-on. Zaheer, the best bowler on view, cleaned him up off the last ball, but by then Pollock had done enough to ensure Mumbai had a reasonable total on the board.
