How they were out

Rajasthan Royals became the first team to book a semi-final spot after they cruised to a six-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. Chasing 148, Rajasthan were in a spot of bother at 69 for 4, but a counterattacking 18-ball 48 from Yusuf Pathan, in an unbroken 81-run stand with Mohammad Kaif, took them to victory with 21 balls to spare. The defeat leaves Kolkata nearly out of the running in the race for semi-final spots, and they will now have to win their remaining two matches, and hope other results go their way to go through.

In a match that Kolkata Knight Riders must win to have realistic semi-final hopes, their batsmen were restricted to 147 by a disciplined performance from Rajasthan Royals' medium-pacers at Eden Gardens. The pitch assisted the fast bowlers and a regular stream of wickets ensured that Kolkata's innings failed to gather the momentum until the final overs.

Shane Warne stuck to his formula of asking the opposition to bat and his decision was backed up by his bowlers who kept Kolkata on a leash during the Powerplays, restricting them to 32 for 1. Warne made innovative bowling changes and tried to unsettle the batsmen by rotating his fast bowlers for each of the first six overs.

Munaf Patel shared the new ball with Sohail Tanvir and his impeccable line and length resulted in a wicket maiden in his first over: he had Mohammad Hafeez caught at mid-on soon after dropping a caught-and-bowled chance.

Tanvir, Munaf and Shane Watson keep the batsmen quiet early on, though Salman Butt, fresh from his 73 against Chennai Super Kings, tried to give the innings a push by striking a few fours. He hit Munaf for consecutive boundaries twice - including a superb cover drive on one knee - before falling leg before as he moved across his stumps.

At the other end, Sourav Ganguly struggled for fluency: he needed seven balls to get off the mark and scored his first boundary to third man just when Warne had brought te fielder in the circle. The battle between the two captains continued when Warne brought himself on. Warne had conceded only one off his first over but Ganguly broke the shackles by launching Warne over square leg in his second.

The regular loss of wickets from then on hampered Kolkata. A frustrated David Hussey was bowled as he tried to charge Yusuf Pathan, while Ganguly later hit Siddharth Trivedi straight into the hands of long-on.

However, Kolkata did well to go from 59 for 2 after ten overs to 147 in 20 largely due to Debabrata Das's sparkling 31 off 20 balls. He announced his arrival with a dead-straight six off Warne, and later dispatched Pathan over midwicket. Laxmi Ratan Shukla and the batsmen to follow also chipped in quick runs, and despite Kolkata losing wickets regularly, the big hits helped them post a challenging 147.

Kolkata may be missing Shoaib Akhtar, but they do have the firepower to test the Rajasthan batsmen, besides a strong contingent of fans to egg them on in what is a crucial game for the home side.
