India’s master blaster Sachin Tendulkar has withdrawn himself from his side’s tri-series competition in Bangladesh and the subsequent Asia Cup in June.
Tendulkar, who played a pivotal role in India’s victory in the tri-series in Australia earlier this year, suffered a temporary setback on account of a groin injury that plagued him in March. Owing to this, he was forced to skip the last two Tests in the drawn home series against South Africa and his team Mumbai Indians’ first 7 matches in the DLF Indian Premier League (IPL).
Zaheer Khan, the Indian seam bowler, had earlier opted out of the Bangladesh tri-series owing to an ankle injury.
Explosive right-handed batsman Yusuf Pathan and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha have been included in the squad for the two series owing to their impressive performances in the IPL. This will be the first time both players will be representing the country in one-day internationals.
Veterans such as Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly have been ignored for selection. Dinesh Karthik and pace bowler Munaf Patel, who played in the CB series earlier this year, also failed to get a nod from the selectors.
The Bangladesh tri-series which will feature Pakistan along with India and the host nation will be played from June 8 to June 14. This will be followed up by the six-nation Asia Cup tournament which will commence on June 24 and wind up on July 6.
