Chennai Super Kings headed into the match needing a win to clinch their place in the semi-finals, and at the halfway stage Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team look favourites to edge out the Mumbai Indians into the final four.
Deccan Chargers, in search for their first win at home, chose to bat but their star-studded line-up failed to live up to their reputation yet again. Dhoni had indicated his side would be more comfortable chasing a target, and 148 shouldn't be too difficult against a weak Deccan bowling line-up.
With Chennai's opening bowlers right on the mark, Deccan struggled from the start. Makhaya Ntini bowled with pace and got good bounce and carry, while Manpreet Gony, the team's leading wicket-taker, stuck to an impeccable length on off stump. Herschelle Gibbs survived a close leg-before in Gony's first over but didn't make the most of the opportunity. After a lofted shot over covers and a pull to long-leg for boundaries, he slashed Ntini straight to L Balaji at third man. Abhinav Mukund was in the same position as he recovered from an early misjudgment to get under a skier from Adam Gilchrist, who got a thick outside-edge while trying to launch Gony straight down the ground.
At 15 for 2 off 3.3 overs, Venugopal Rao and Scott Styris were left with the rebuilding job. With the bowlers sticking to a tight line - Gony bowled through his four for 1 for 21 - runs came mainly in singles. Styris hasn't had a tournament to boast about, but he looked to be getting into rhythm with boundaries in the arc between midwicket and mid-on.
Styris was lucky that Ntini lost a top-edge in the lights, but he couldn't capitalise - bowled off the very next ball while trying to hit over the leg side. Deccan were stuck at 57 for 3 after 10.1 overs and, with Rohit Sharma sitting out due to a sore finger, it was left to Rao and Ravi Teja to salvage the situation.
They came up with a 76-run stand, and managed to up the run-rate as well. With Muttiah Muralitharan hard to get away, the two went after Balaji in the 14th over: Rao gave himself room to send one over the extra-cover boundary, and Teja fiercely cut one through point. They managed to find a boundary every over, and Rao hit one straight over the bowler's head to bring up Deccan's 100 in the 16th over.
The crowd was chanting for the arrival of Shahid Afridi as Teja slashed one high into the off-side stands in the 18th over, bowled by Ntini. Fifteen came off that over, but Ntini still ended with figures of 1 for 24 off his four and though three wickets fell in the 19th over from Albie Morkel, Deccan still got 13.
Afridi faced his first ball in the final over, but skied one to Suresh Raina at long-off, and Morkel's effort to dismiss RP Singh - the ball went high in the air - on the final delivery capped a dominant first half for his side. Deccan will be hoping that Afridi and RP can do a bit more with the ball.
