After a torrid run through the first seven matches of the IPL, Sourav Ganguly the batsman finally made his presence felt, carving a 57-ball 91 to lift the Kolkata Knight Riders to an imposing 204 for 4, the highest first-innings total in the tournament since the ninth match, when the Deccan Chargers made 214 against Rajasthan Royals.
Ganguly's decision at the toss was slightly surprising, considering all three previous matches in Hyderabad had been won by the team chasing, but their batsmen justified that decision. The start wasn't electric - the first six overs fetched 43, and after 13 Kolkata only had 89 on the board - but the last seven overs produced 115 as Ganguly and David Hussey, who blitzed 57 off 29 balls, creamed the ball to all parts in a fantastic 102-run stand off just 48 balls.
Kolkata's innings was all about Ganguly getting his groove back. Through the first seven matches, he had struggled to find the balance between defence and attack, often pottering around the crease and ultimately choosing the wrong ball to attack, but here he was far more certain about his shot-selection, getting his eye in through the early part of his innings before shifting gears quite imperiously.
The early loss of Salman Butt - edging to the wicketkeeper off Chaminda Vaas - meant Ganguly was out in the middle after just four deliveries, and he made full use of the opportunity. His method through the early part of the innings was simple: he either shuffled across and carefully defended deliveries, or gave himself room, moved his front foot out of the way, and smeared lofted hits over mid-on and cover. Chaminda Vaas and P Vijaykumar, the new-ball bowlers, were at the receiving end early, and when they shifted the line to leg stump, Ganguly cleverly shuffled across and pulled or flicked to the fine-leg boundary. In between these improvisations was one classical square drive, all timing and grace, when RP Singh strayed in line.
On a pitch lacking pace, Ganguly adjusted superbly against the slower bowlers too. When Scott Styris angled one away outside off, Ganguly still managed to shuffle outside the line and pat it away to fine leg, while Pragyan Ojha's faster one was late-cut quite delectably.
With the innings requiring more momentum, Ganguly then changed gears effortlessly. His penchant for left-arm spinners is well known, and here Ojha was the chosen one, as Ganguly spanked a couple of straight sixes and a four down the ground to signal the lift in tempo. Styris suffered successive sixes a couple of overs later, while the listless Vaas was carved over midwicket. At the other end, Hussey turned it on too, hitting RP for two sixes and a four in the 18th over, as runs came in a deluge.
Deccan were also hit hard by a woeful fielding performance - there were plenty of misfields, Vaas dropped a sitter off Tatenda Taibu, and the last ball of the innings typified their performance, as RP threw wildly at the striker's end to concede four overthrows.
