An irrepressible Rajasthan Royals side got their fourth successive win of the tournament and nudged past Delhi to second place in the points table with a win over a listless Kolkata Knight Riders. A confident batting display from Swapnil Asnodkar and Yusuf Pathan was followed by disciplined bowling by Rajasthan's quicks as they justified Shane Warne's decision to bat first on a flat track in Jaipur.
More to follow
Swapnil Asnodkar sizzled in the Jaipur heat with an attacking half-century on his debut for the Rajasthan Royals and, backed by Yusuf Pathan's charge in the middle overs, delivered a very competitive 196 and justified Shane Warne's decision to bat first on a flat wicket. With the temperature reportedly touching 45 degrees Celsius, the toss - allowing Rajasthan's bowlers to avoid the afternoon sun - may have a crucial bearing on the game.
Asnodkar, who opened the innings with Graeme Smith, cut, drove and slogged for his 60, playing cautiously against Ishant Sharma and Umar Gul - who eventually had him caught trying to pull - and targeting the wayward Ashok Dinda and Ajit Agarkar. He hit Agarkar for three successive fours and reached his fifty off 29 balls. Other memorable shots included a flick to square off a Gul yorker - which, though fetching only one run, reflected his confidence - and a cut behind point off Sourav Ganguly despite being cramped for room.
Yusuf, who also got to his fifty off 29 balls, added 53 with Asnodkar. He went after David Hussey's insipid spin and Agarkar's short-of-length deliveries and helped Rajasthan score 53 between overs 10 and 15. Yusuf mostly got his runs through slogging - standing back and putting his weight behind the bat - and reached his fifty with a massive six driven straight on to the cloth roof.
Gul, playing his first game, was disciplined early on, bowling successive yorkers; his first two overs yielded two wickets for 15 runs. But it was Ishant Sharma, bowling straight and full, against whom the batsmen didn't take many chances. Gul and Ishant both conceded free hits and went for runs off them - Ravindra Jadeja lifting Gul for a six and cutting Ishant for four. Gul then slowed Rajasthan down with two key wickets - of Asnodkar and Shane Watson - in the same over but Jadeja's cameo - 33 off 19 balls - helped Rajasthan to a competitive score.
Ganguly used seven bowlers, including himself, but was not always backed up in the field. Twice in the innings, the ball went past fielders who were in the process of collecting it. But with the pitch aiding run-scoring, Kolkata have a chance to reverse their last two failures and put the brakes on Rajasthan's winning streak.
