Ganguly's maiden double ton guides India past 600

‘The Prince of Kolkata’ Sourav Ganguly's blistering knock of 239 and Irfan Pathan's maiden Test century propelled India to a daunting total 620 in its first innings at Bangalore. In reply, Pakistan was 86/1 at stumps on Day 2 of the third and final Test match of the three-Test series between the arch rivals.

Maiden double!

Ganguly's patient 125 on Day 1 went unnoticed due to the sheer magnitude of class that Yuvraj Singh had packed in his swashbuckling innings of 169. But the protagonist on Day 2 struck his maiden double century that helped India post its record-breaking biggest total against Pakistan at home.

Carrying on from where he left yesterday, Sourav Ganguly kept piling runs. He shared a 66 runs partnership with Dinesh Karthik (24) who was dismissed by debutant Yasir Arafat. Irfan Pathan, the fourth left hander in the Indian side walked in and very soon the story began to take the familiar route. The Baorda all-rounder paced his innings well, cutting and pulling the loose ones and rotating the strike throughout.

Meanwhile, Ganguly came into his own by hitting some magnificent off and straight drives. He reached the magical milestone by driving Arafat for a couple. The whole of Bangalore stood up to acknowledge the master's monumental effort.

He upped the ante later and was dismissed by Kaneria on 239 trying to sweep a flighted one that hit his off stump. Battling for over 8 hours, Ganguly's 239 is also the 7th highest Test score by an Indian batsman. This is also the 2nd double century by an Indian batsman in this series after Wasim Jaffer crafted magnificent 209 in the Kolkata Test.

Sachin Tendulkar becomes first player to score more than 15,962 ODI runs in the World
BELFAST, June 29: Sachin Tendulkar reached yet another milestone in his illustrious career by becoming the first cricketer ever to score 15,000 ODI runs in the second One-dayer against South Africa on Friday.
Playing his 387th match, Tendulkar hit Andre Nel for an awesome six -- his 160th six -- in the fourth ball of the 18th over to get to 45 and after a dot ball, he drove the pacer into covers and darted for a single, while the overthrow from covers raced to the boundary to complete his half century.
With this, he completed his 15000 runs in the shorter version of the game.
Before this match, Tendulkar had 14950 ODI runs under his belt with 41 centuries against his name and an average of 44.10.
Tendulkar made his ODI debut against Pakistan at Gujranwala on December 18, 1989.
Hailed as modern day Don Bradman by none other than the great Australian himself, Tendulkar is also the first batsman to score 50 hundreds in international cricket.
Tendulkar was the first cricketer to cross 10,000-run mark in One-dayers and only six other players have achieved the feat -- Sanath Jayasuriya, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara, and Inzamam-ul Haq.
Sachin was also the fastest to reach 10,000 runs taking 259 innings and has the highest batting average among batsmen with over 10,000 ODI runs.
He boasts of most ODI centuries, won most (53) Man of the Match and most (13) Man of the Series Awards.
He scored most runs (1,796 at an average of 59.87) in World Cup Cricket history, including four centuries and 13 fifties with a best score of 152 not out against Namibia in 2003.

Yuvraj hammers six sixes in an over
Fastest 50 in just 12 balls with 3 4's & 6 6's

Yuvraj blasts his way into history

September 19, 2007

Yuvraj Singh's savage assault on Stuart Broad made him the first batsman to hit six sixes in an over in Twenty20 internationals and the fourth in senior cricket. Garry Sobers and Ravi Shastri did it in first-class matches, Herschelle Gibbs in the World Cup and now Yuvraj.

Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes in an over and reached his 50 off just 12 balls

18.1 Broad to Yuvraj Singh, SIX, that's out the ground, super shot over cow corner and it just kept going up.

18.2 Broad to Yuvraj Singh, SIX, now that really is sweet, no more than a dismissive flick off his legs, swatting a fly, and the ball arcs deep into the crowd beyond backward square leg. The dodgy TV measurement says that's 111 yards but as it landed outside the ground how do they know? They guess that's how.

18.3 Broad to Yuvraj Singh, SIX, he's hitting them everywhere, he steps to leg and smashes the ball over extra cover and it keeps on traveling. The fireworks start on top of the scoreboard and they've been going off in the middle for some time.

18.4 Broad to Yuvraj Singh, SIX, Shiver me timbers! Broad goes round the wicket, bowls a filthy wide full toss and Yuvraj steers it over backward point and it clears the rope again.

18.5 Broad to Yuvraj Singh, SIX, down on one knee and larruped over midwicket, that one was more nine iron, it went into the night sky and dropped with a thud in the jubilant crowd. England have a team meeting.

Broad looks quizzical and miserable. Can he, can Yuvraj do it. Broad looks like a man who knows he is about to be mauled again.

18.6 Broad to Yuvraj Singh, SIX, and he has, Yuvraj leans back and smacks that over wide mid-on. It was the maximum from the moment it left that bat and the crowd was roaring as it flew.

Indian cricketers felicitated in gala function in Mumbai

Low expectations led to high determination - Dhoni

September 26, 2007

Mahendra Singh Dhoni holds aloft the ICC World Twenty20 trophy at a felicitation ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium

A grand ceremony at a packed Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai saw Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the Indian team honoured for for winning the ICC World Twenty20. While the players received cheques of Rs 80 lakh ($200,000) each, the coaches and support staff were given Rs 15 lakh ($38,000) each.

The ceremony came at the end of a nearly five-hour-long ride on an open-top double-decker bus from Sahar international airport. Traffic was brought to a standstill on the route, approximately 20 kilometres long, with crowds lining the roadsides. The journey was made amid tight security, with police outriders leading the motorcade.

Even a steady downfall of rain could not dampen the spirits of players or the public as the team was first received by Sharad Pawar, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Vilasrao Deshmukh, the chief minister of Maharashtra and other top brass of the BCCI and the state government.

After the team received cheques, Dhoni addressed the crowd and began with the ball that clinched the ICC World Twenty20. "When Misbah-ul-Haq played that shot, my initial fear was that it might land just behind Sreesanth. So I was not looking at Sreesanth, my eyes were on his hands, whether he could catch it," Dhoni said. Asked if the temperamental Sreesanth left Dhoni a bit tense he said, "Not a bit, he makes me quite tense" before adding "But every team needs characters like him."

Dhoni praised the cricketers who came from the smaller towns in India, saying: "Guys coming from small-time towns are generally mentally and physically tougher than those coming from the metros. Smaller towns lack infrastructure and facilities so players from there have to work harder." Dhoni added that it was the hunger to do well at the international level that made people achieve great things. "Whether it's the small-town guys or those from the metros, everyone wanted to perform at the international stage and they have been successful."

Dhoni admitted that he was a bit nervous about his maiden captaincy stint, but explained that his team helped him stay calm. "I think a little nervousness at this level is justified but the way all 15 players responded, I hardly had a reason to worry," he said. "Whoever I tossed the ball to fetched me wickets. Whoever walked out to bat, scored the runs. So the pressure was considerably less on me. Besides, the entire team had full faith in each other's abilities and that's important."

India's entry into the tournament as one of the less-fancied teams helped them go all the way, Dhoni said. "We were quite relaxed. We discussed the issue at the very first team meeting. We were not tipped favourites, nobody expected us to reach the Super Eights or knock-out stage. And whenever the expectation is less, the determination is high. We did not do well in the World Cup [in West Indies] and so it was the perfect stage for the team. We took it one match at a time and treated the final as just another match and that helped."

The serious partying and the long flight from Johannesburg had not deprived Dhoni of his sense of humour. "We are told that Mumbai is a city which is always on the move. See, my boys and I have brought the entire city to a standstill today." And that they certainly did.

Twenty20 captain takes over from Dravid

Dhoni to lead India's ODI squad

September 18, 2007

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's rapid career rise continued with his appointment on Tuesday as captain of India's one-day team for the home series against Australia and Pakistan. The selectors, who made that decision in Mumbai today, also picked the squad for the first three ODIs against Australia, bringing in Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan but finding no place for Virender Sehwag.

The decision on a Test captain, Dilip Vengsarkar, the chairman of selectors, said, would be taken at a later date. "We will see how Dhoni performs in these 12 ODIs before choosing the Test captain [for the Pakistan series]," he said.

Dhoni, who is the captain of India's Twenty20 squad, had been tipped to take on the ODI role after Rahul Dravid announced his resignation. "Dhoni is a good captain and has done well in the Twenty20 World Cup. It is the right time to groom him," Vengsarkar said.

The squad he will lead includes three former captains and several others who are senior to him but Vengsarkar said he didn't see it as a problem. "He would have three former captains in the ranks who would give him full support. You are talking about having three captains - Azharuddin had five former captains under him when he led India in England," Vengsarkar said.

There had been some speculation that Sachin Tendulkar would be made captain in both forms of the game but Vengsarkar sought to dismisss it. "We did not offer the captaincy to anyone, nor did we talk to him [Tendulkar] regarding the Test captaincy," he said.

The key points in the selection of the 15-man squad were the return of Harbhajan and Pathan, the continued absence of Virender Sehwag and the dropping of Ajit Agarkar, Munaf Patel and Rohit Sharma from the side that toured England.

Sehwag, Vengsarkar said, would get an opportunity in the series because the selectors planned to rotate the players.

Vengsarkar also felt that both Pathan and Harbhajan had done enough to merit a comeback. "They have done well in the Twenty20 World Cup and they deserve it. We need an allrounder in the No 7 or 8 position and Irfan gives us more options. We will see his performance in the first few one-dayers."

Commenting on his appointment, Dhoni said he was aware of the pressure and challenges that come with it.

"I just heard the news in the afternoon and haven't had the time to reflect on that since I am preparing for the games against England and South Africa," Dhoni told PTI. "It seriously is [ a high pressure job], I am telling you. I don't know how I will react to it though. If the team does well, nobody bothers you."

Dhoni, who was the vice-captain of the ODI team on the tour of England, has had a meteoric rise since making his one-day debut in December 2004. He has scored 2477 runs in 84 ODIs at an average of 44.23 and a strike rate of 96.26. His highest score, an unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka in 2006, is a record for a wicketkeeper and also the record for the most runs scored by a batsman while chasing. Dhoni had also occupied the top batsman's spot in the ICC one-day rankings in April 2006.

Sri Lankan stars in Lancashire leagues

Pathirana smashes 277 in Twenty20 onslaught

September 5, 2007

Dhanuka Pathirana: 29 sixes and 18 fours in his onslaught
Sri Lankan first-class player Dhanuka Pathirana scored a remarkable 277 off 72 balls in a Twenty20 match in Lancashire's Saddleworth League to steer his Austerlands side to 366 for 2 and an easy win over Droylsden. Pathirana smashed 29 sixes and 18 fours in his onslaught.

"Everything seemed to hit the middle," Pathirana, who had to borrow a bat as he had left his at home, said. "I was seeing it like a football. It was like a dream ... I think I did some serious damage to some of the vehicles in the car park."

"It was unbelievable," Austerlands' Andy Young told the Manchester Evening News. "Dhanuka normally bats at No. 3 but we needed to up our run rate to reach the semi-finals, so we asked him to open and said to him: 'Just go for it'. And he certainly did.

"It was scary to watch and it wasn't on one of the smaller grounds in our league. He is one of those guys who we always knew was capable of a massive innings, but this was incredible."

I haven't thought of retirement - Tendulkar

September 6, 2007

Sachin Tendulkar says he isn't even thinking about retiring © Getty Images

Sachin Tendulkar has dismissed speculation about his retirement from one-day cricket, saying he was "batting brilliantly" at the moment and the thought of quitting had not even crossed his mind.

"The thought of retirement has not crossed my mind," Tendulkar told PTI. "I am still enjoying the game very much and want to play for as long as I can. Cricket means a lot to me."

Tendulkar's clarification sought to end speculation over his retiring from one-day cricket after India's home engagements against Pakistan and Australia later this season. Cricinfo had reported, quoting sources close to Tendulkar, that he was inclined to announce his retirement on this tour of England but had been persuaded by friends to do so at home.

Tendulkar, along with Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, had opted out of the ICC World Twenty20 and he had told The Times of the toll one-day cricket was taking on his body. "I enjoy every moment I have on a cricket field, but the recovery times between games these days are difficult, especially for one-day internationals, and that's my major obstacle," he said. "It does take its toll on the body. When you are 22 or 23, you recover a lot more quickly. But at 34, it's not so easy."

Tendulkar has been in excellent one-day form on the tour of the United Kingdom so far. In ten innings, he has plundered 548 runs, with four 90s, at a strike rate of 84.3. The tour also reunited him with his opening partner Sourav Ganguly, and the pair, the most prolific in the history of one-day cricket, added four more century partnerships to take their tally to 25, 16 of them for the first wicket.

NEPAL QUALIFY FOR THE YOUTH WORLD CUP

Nepal qualified for the Youth World Cup 2008 clinching the ACC U-19 Elite Cup cricket tournament at the Kinrara Oval Ground on Wednesday.

In the final, Nepal defeated Afghanistan by 48 runs for its fourth successive title at this level. In a closely contested match, Nepal batted first to score 172 runs in 49.4 overs and bowled out the South Asian neighbors for 124 in 45.5 overs.

Nepal has not lost a single match in the event since 2001, winning titles in 2001, 2003 and 2005 prior to this. Nepal was runner-up to Bangladesh in 1999.

“This is a great win,” Nepal’s coach Roy Dias commented after the victory. “Among all matches, the final was the most interesting.” Nepal will now play its fifth Youth World Cup (YWC) in Malaysia in February, 2008. ACC informed that there would not be any playoff against Scotland for the YWC spot.

While defending a moderate total, Nepali spinners played a crucial role as Shashi Keshari led with three wickets while Rahul Biswokarma and Sagar Khadka each took two wickets. Raj Shrestha took a wicket while pacers Amrit Bhattarai and Abhaya Rana chipped in with one each.

But it was Amrit and Paras Khadka who bowled with discipline restricting free-hitting Afghan batsmen at the start of the innings that set the foundation for victory. The Afghans played very slowly in the beginning scoring a run-an-over till the 10th over and at the rate of two runs until the 34th over.

Man-of-the-final Shir Shirzai scored 66 runs for Afghanistan and as long as he was at the crease, Afghanistan was hopeful of a victory despite needing 64 runs in the last 10 overs. But it collapsed from 108/5 to 124 all out in an attempt to accelerate.

Nepal lost two wickets in the first two overs, after electing to bat, as Shashi Keshari and Gyanendra Malla were dismissed to put the team in trouble. Paras Khadka and Mahesh Chhetri added 44 runs before Paras was bowled off an inside-edge at 28. Soon, Mahesh departed for 14 along with Antim Thapa and Nepal slumped to 60/5 in the 22nd over.

Akash Gupta, batting at No 7, was in a different mood though and scored a run-a-ball 48 with six fours and a six. He partnered 61 runs with Sagar Khadka, who himself got 32 off 79 balls. Raj Shrestha also got 14 runs.

“Nepal’s bowling was better than we thought,” Afghan coach Taj Malik said. “They played great cricket.”

“I am grateful to my players for this win,” captain Paras Khadka, who was later named man-of-the-series, said after the win. “We didn’t score much but we won convincingly.”

The 2010 ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup will be held in Kenya while the 2012 tournament will be staged in Canada and UAE will host the 2014 edition.
